Straight out of the 1880s! The Roaring Camp & Big Trees railroad is an experience in Felton, California. About an hour and a half drive from San Francisco, the roaring camp railroad aims to recreate what a classic logging railroad and town would feel like. Using classic steam locomotives such as the Shay and the Heisler, Roaring Camp traverses up the side of a mountain, offering scenic views of the redwood forests. Roaring camp #1, “Dixiana”, is a Class B Shay type locomotive built in 1912 by the Lima locomotive works. Originally built for the Alaculsy Lumber Company, it switched operators a number of times before ending up in the ownership of F. Norman Clark. It was restored at the new Roaring Camp Railroad in 1962 and has been pulling passengers through the redwoods ever since.
