When discussing battery safety, I hear warnings that we, the public, should not purchase counterfeit batteries as they have more risk of having a "thermal event." For those of you that do not know, a thermal event is what occurs when a battery is damaged or misused, and can reach temperature thresholds of 1800F or more. Batteries can go into thermal runaway due to manufacturing defects or short cuts, which are the batteries I am referring to in the case. During my visit to The Battery Show last week, I had the opportunity to see Lumafield's solution firsthand. Instead of solely focusing on educating the public about the risks of counterfeit products, we should also scrutinize all lower-priced items. It is vital for manufacturers to implement 100% quality checks using advanced systems and solutions, or they should disclose if they are using "inferior" and potentially "more dangerous" components. However, this approach faces numerous challenges. Products with UL Solutions are typically a safe choice. But, simply advising consumers to buy more expensive, brand-name products based on the assumption that they contain quality parts from reputable manufacturers like Murta, Samsung, and Panasonic does not reflect the realities of our global supply chain. Many consumers opt for convenience, leading to questions about how we can inform them that their earbuds, must be purchased from a specific brand, often at a price that is 10-20 times higher. Understanding how technology can enhance our safety is crucial. I appreciate the efforts of Lumafield in developing their report, which I am featuring in my latest Fire Report publishing this week at Waste360.
