Weekly Update, October 10, 2025: With Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment period about to begin on October 15, this is a good opportunity to revisit how the plan impacts retired Massachusetts public employees – and how it does not. We strongly suggest that retired public employees ignore the onslaught of ads, calls, and marketing materials that are about to be directed at you. Medicare’s Open Enrollment is specifically focused on individual Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, not the group MA or traditional Medicare Supplement plans in which public retirees are enrolled. For the most part, the individual MA plans being marketed are not of the same quality as the plans retirees have access to through the GIC or municipal governments. And if you do happen to join an individual MA plan or any plan not offered by the state/municipal government, you will no longer be eligible for enrollment in your current health insurance plan. When it comes to Medicare’s open enrollment period and the marketing of individual MA plans, Buyer Beware is something to keep in mind. And if you suspect Medicare fraud, please contact the Senior Medicare Patrol at https://smpresource.org. Public retirees should also be aware that if you are eligible for Medicare A & B, either on your own or through your spouse, then state law requires that you enroll in Medicare. This process is referred to as “Turning 65” and is the main focus of our Weekly Update email. Full details on Turning 65 and Medicare eligibility/enrollment is contained in the Weekly Update email sent to all Mass Retirees Association members. The Weekly Update is emailed to all members every Friday morning at 6:00 AM. After reading our weekly update, members are encouraged to contact Association officials directly should you have any questions.
