Driver training. I know; there is a lot to see in this video for one pair of eyes. I’ll explain why it’s still worth it: Back in 2016 we were facing the problem of having no one on the team with motorsport driving experience except me. Florian, who raced with me in 2015, left Rennteam to continue his studies. Therefore, we had to focus on driver training besides building, testing and tuning a racecar. We’ve chosen René as the second driver, who joined Rennteam to develop and build our dry sump lubricant system, because he showed promising and continuous lap times. With no motorsport experience he had a hard time to get to know the parts of the track where he was losing time. Looking at all the collected data from our sensors and comparing ourselves to the simulated ideal lap time from the computer helped a lot. To make that information more accessible and observe their influence on the race line it’s useful to build something like the video you can see above. By comparing me on the left (with colored data) to René on the right (black data) there are some differences noticeable: While the data is showing kinda similar G-forces and even higher steering angles for René, he can’t rotate the car after the turn in as fast as I could on this track. Because of that he had some hard times to nail the corner exit resulting in less speed at the exit and on the straights. The data also shows differences in braking points and the videos showed the distance to the cones as well as the race line in general. With a video like this, driver training gets easier because the drivers have all the information, they need to compare themselves with each other on a single screen. A great thing René did was driving the slalom after the hairpin starting from the left, while I chose to take the right side for entrance. This gave me a hard time approaching the line change afterwards while his line was way smoother and faster. You can see the difference of course in the sensor data but it’s much more obvious why he gained so much time when seeing onboard footage additionally. So even the driver with the faster lap can learn from the slower one.
