the history of Rajasthan is filled with brave warriors who fought lifelong battles for their motherland, never gave up despite immense difficulties, endured countless hardships, and never betrayed their principles or bowed to anyone. One such warrior was Durgadas Rathore, whose courage and tenacity kept Aurangzeb awake at night. This is the story of Durgadas Rathore, who fought against Aurangzeb for thirty years and even turned Aurangzeb’s own son against him. Born on August 13, 1638, in the village of Salwa in Marwar, Durgadas Rathore grew up amidst adversity. His parents separated soon after his birth, and he lived with his mother, working as a farmer. His journey to the royal court of Jodhpur began with a fierce sense of patriotism. He once killed a man who insulted Jodhpur, an act that caught the attention of Maharaja Jaswant Singh, who welcomed Durgadas into his court. Under Maharaja Jaswant Singh's reign, Durgadas became a prominent commander. When Jaswant Singh died, leaving no male heir, Aurangzeb saw an opportunity to seize Marwar. However, Durgadas thwarted his plans, protecting Jaswant Singh’s newborn son, Ajit Singh, and taking a stand against the Mughal emperor’s impositions. Durgadas Rathore's relentless resistance against the Mughal Empire was marked by numerous guerrilla battles. His strategic alliances and military acumen earned him respect and support from other states, including Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's own son, Akbar II. Despite several setbacks and the eventual death of Akbar II, Durgadas continued to fight for Marwar's independence. In a strategic move, Durgadas managed to secure a compromise where Ajit Singh was granted a small estate, though the fight for complete control over Marwar persisted. Eventually, after Aurangzeb's death in 1707, Durgadas reclaimed Jodhpur and reinstated Ajit Singh as the Maharaja, restoring Marwar’s temples and pride. Durgadas Rathore retired to Ujjain, where he lived until his death on November 22, 1718. His legacy as a true hero and warrior who fought tirelessly against the Mughal Empire remains a source of inspiration.
