What is courage? According to John Wayne, "Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway." I’m Glenn Taylor with Skybound Coaching & Training. And in this video, we’re going to explore what it means to lead with courage. Ok, let’s first talk about what it’s not … Courageous leadership doesn’t mean being tough and unfeeling in the face of challenges. It’s not about taking the craziest risks without blinking an eye. And it’s not about doing something big all by yourself and then soaking up the glory and applause. Courage is, on the other hand, about being willing to step into fear for the sake of something important. And, these days, there are lots of important things leaders might need to do or say – like having a difficult conversation, admitting a mistake, or making a decision that may be unpopular. So why do these things feel scary? Well, they involve being vulnerable. Because chances are, you may not do it perfectly, you may even fail at first, or be criticized. But it’s these moments of courage that show what you’re made of as a leader. They call you to be grounded in your purpose and values. Which, by the way, is a good place to start – the clearer you are on your core purpose and values, and those of your organization, the easier it is to step into uncomfortable situations. So I hope you’ll join me, and John Wayne, in a personal goal of saddling up even when we’re scared. Ok, that’s it for now. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below, and I’ll see you in the next video. Interested in leadership coaching or training? Let's chat!
