How to fit a backpack for backpacking

Fitting a backpack correctly to your torso size is essential for a backpacking trip. You'll carry about 20% of your body weight in your pack, so it's imperative to make sure you're as comfortable as you can be. Here's how to adjust your backpack to your torso length in order to fit perfectly on your back: -- If the shoulder straps can move up and down to fit various torso lengths, start by positioning the straps in the middle (average) position. NOTE: Our packs are one-size-fits-most! If you have a different pack, skip this step. -- Expand all the straps and put about 20 lbs of weight in the backpack to mimic the sensation of a full backpack. -- Start by positioning and tightening the waist strap over your hips. Next, cinch down the shoulder straps until just finger tight. Then reach behind your ears to find the load bearing straps and pull them forward until just finger tight to bring the top of the pack closer to your back. Most of the weight in the pack should now be on your hips. CHECK FOR FIT: The padded part of the backpack should be in line with your shoulder blades and the shoulder straps should come down a couple inches lower than your arm pits. -- If padded part of back is too low and shoulder straps dig into your arm pits, you have a longer torso than average. Take backpack off and raise the shoulder straps, then try the backpack on again. -- If padded part is too high and shoulder straps cinch down as far as they can, you have a shorter torso length. Take backpack off and shorten the shoulder straps, then try the backpack on again. -- Repeat until you find the perfect position.
