A Walk Through the Gates | Backpacking Gates of the Arctic National Park

Two weeks in the remote Gates of the Arctic National Park. Above the Arctic Circle in the Brooks Range of Northern Alaska, we hiked through valleys, passes and across moraines for weeks. This has been our most ambitions and logistically involved trip to date but we can't wait to head back up to Alaska, hopefully with a couple packrafts in tow. As I said, this place is above the Arctic Circle and as such the habitat is very susceptible to human impacts. Due to the short summer growing season and overall austere conditions, impacts to the land take much longer to recover when compared to wild places in the lower 48. While this area was remote, we did see a few parties of backpackers, mostly commercially led, which shows the growing popularity of the area and the impacts that come along with it like increased air travel, creation of social paths and the loss of a sense of solitude.
