Winters can be harsh at our centres in Agra and Mathura. As temperatures dip, we strengthen specialised care for our rescued elephants and sloth bears, many of whom are geriatric. For our elephants, enclosures are reinforced with tarpaulin sheets to block cold winds, while halogen lamps during night provide a steady source of warmth. Geriatric elephants are wrapped in insulating blankets, and daily oil massages help improve circulation and ease joint stiffness that winter often brings. Their diets are thoughtfully adapted with warming masala, jaggery and ghee to support digestion, maintain body heat and provide sustained energy, along with fresh seasonal fodder. Our rescued sloth bears receive warm millet-based porridge enriched with jaggery and added nutrients. Their enclosures are lined with thick straw bedding, with tarpaulin coverings and heaters. Throughout the colder months, our veterinarians and caregivers closely monitor every animal under our care, adjusting treatment based on age, medical history and individual needs. For us, winter care is about comfort, consistency and ensuring our rescued animals continue to receive the care they deserve.Caring for elephants and bears takes constant effort and round the clock dedication.
