Driving the Tusheti Road in Georgia—one of the world’s most dangerous mountain roads—was the only way out after our 4-day, 75 km trek from Shatili to Omalo. This 72 km single-track road is cut into the cliffs of the Caucasus, with sheer drop-offs, landslides, washouts, and river crossings that regularly shut it down from June to October. The road follows the Satskhrevkhorkhi River and had only just reopened that week after being closed until July due to flooding and rockfall. Livestock block the path, the terrain shifts constantly, and the climb to Abano Pass (2,926 m / 9,600 ft)—the highest drivable pass in the Caucasus—is as intense as it is unforgettable. Tusheti is one of the most remote regions of the world, known for it's ancient towers and snow covered mountains. Only inhabited in the summer months, visiting Tusheti is like stepping back in time. The road is lined with memorials for those who perished along the route. It is a dirt track, subject to avalances, mudslides, and other natural dangers, not to mention other motorists along the narrow, winding cliffs. Guardrails? No! We filmed this in 2018, so the footage is shakier than what we capture now, but the experience remains one of the most extreme drives we’ve ever recorded.
