In this video, Sam Modest discusses the process he and his co-teacher, Erin Metcalf, are going through to refine structured word inquiry practice in their Grade 2 class at the Nueva School where I have been a "visiting scholar" for the 2015-2016 school year. See how they work to balance "teacher-led inquiry" where they select orthographic topics for study and "inquiry-led teaching" where they draw on questions from students to provide the bases of their inquiries -- even when they do not yet know the "answers" to those questions. They purposely take on questions like the morphological structure of the word "hypnosis" even though they don't know what it is. Sam and Erin are also continually refining their own understanding of orthographic concepts and terminology. It was just this year that they decided to dive into the use of IPA symbols to help them investigate orthographic phonology. Study with Real Spelling Tool Box themes and a visit from Lyn Anderson (Beyond the Word: www.wordsinbogor.blogspot.ca) provided structures that they used to refine how they could organize their own investigations of grapheme-phoneme correspondences.
