Fossils of "Vasuki Indicus," a giant prehistoric snake, were discovered in Gujarat, India, and are estimated to have lived around 47 million years ago, potentially being one of the largest snakes ever. Here's a more detailed look at the discovery and what we know about this massive snake: Discovery Location: The fossils, including 27 vertebrae, were found in a lignite mine in Gujarat, India. Age: The snake, named Vasuki indicus, is estimated to have lived around 47 million years ago, during the Middle Eocene period. Size: Researchers estimate that Vasuki indicus could have reached lengths between 10.9 and 15.2 meters (36 to 50 feet), making it comparable in size to a school bus or a railway coach. Classification: Vasuki indicus belonged to the now-extinct Madtsoiidae snake family, but represents a unique lineage from India. Name Origin: The name "Vasuki" comes from the divine serpent king in Hindu mythology, Vasuki, who is a giant, powerful serpent that coils around Lord Shiva's neck. Significance: The discovery is significant because it provides insights into prehistoric biodiversity in India and helps understand the evolution of giant snakes. Research: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee studied the fossils and confirmed that they belonged to a new species of giant snake. Initial Misidentification: The fossils were initially mistaken for those of a crocodile-like reptile, but further analysis confirmed that they belonged to a prehistoric snake. Other Fossils: Other fossils found in the area included crocodilians, turtles, fish, and two primitive whales.
