(30 Dec 1994) English/Nat Freed American military pilot Bobby Hall is flying home to the United States after almost two weeks of captivity in North Korea. Hall walked across the demilitarized zone from North to South Korea Friday, ending a 13-day crisis that began when his helicopter came down on the wrong side of the demilitarised zone. Anxious American soldiers gathered to welcome the arrival of Bobby Hall, who was flying from Panmunjom to Seoul after his release from North Korean captivity. Several journalists joining the soldiers at the Osan Air Force Base were on hand to record the pilot's first public remarks since his release. Hall's first words were for the widow of his army colleague who died when their helicopter came down. SOUNDBITE: "First and foremost I'd like to express my deep sympathy for Mrs. Hilemon, the widow of CW2 David Hilemon. I'd like to express my deep sympathy for his family and all his friends. And I would also like to thanks all the sailors, soldiers, marines and air force for all their help and Mr. Hubbard, Congressman Richardson, for all their help and my speedy return back to the United states, or back to the Free World. I'd also like to express my gratitude towards my family and friends and everyone in Brooksville and everyone that had anything to do with helping me and supporting me to get back to the United States. That's about it for right now". SUPER CAPTION: Bobby Hall, Army Pilot Afterwards, Thomas Hubbard the U.S. State Department official sent to negotiate Hall's release, also expressed sorrow over the loss of the American. SOUNDBITE: "Let me say first and foremost that I share Chief Warrant Officer Hall's sadness at the loss of his comrade Chief Warrant Officer David Hilemon and I extend my sympathies also to his family. I cannot tell you how pleased I was today to see Bobby Hall walk across the DMZ a few minutes after Mr. Christianson and I did. We spent two very difficult days in Pyongyang discussing Mr. Hall's circumstances. I am pleased-- He was detained in North Korea far too long. I am pleased that the North Korean leadership took into account our humanitarian concerns and released him safely to us". SUPER CAPTION: Thomas Hubbard, State Department official Moments after his statement, Hall shook hands with his colleagues and boarded the plane which will take him to McDill Air force Base in Florida. Hall was handed over to top American military personnel by North Korean generals. The pilot appeared tired and dazed as he walked across the DMZ to freedom, wearing the same green flight suit he wore when his chopper went down. The results of his medical checkup in Seoul aren't yet public.
