Learning starts at VSA Future Virtual Camp

In English, students become masters of phonics and strong readers. Daily grammar lessons include key concepts in parts of speech, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Classes target Common Core standards including prefixes, suffixes, contractions, and simple and compound sentences. In Reading & Writing, campers are exposed to genres ranging from poetry, fables, and plays to fiction and nonfiction. Through teacher-directed modeling and guided reading, students ask and answer questions about key details and identify characters, settings, and major events in a story. Students learn a new type of writing each week, including narratives, opinion pieces, and informative texts, and undertake the full writing process using a variety of handwriting and dictation. In math, students practice counting, recognizing and representing numbers, basic addition and subtraction facts, and shapes. Our experienced teachers help students tackle word problems with an array of problem-solving strategies. Through interactive and colorful exercises in critical core-content areas, including measurement, geometry, base ten operations, and algebraic thinking, students hone their numbers sense over the summer.
