James Kalm has been looking forward to visiting “Harmony & Dissonance” at the Guggenheim Museum for the last two months. Bogged down with projects, and bad weather, your correspondent was finally able to take in a viewing of this historic show on the last weekend of its run. Beginning in Paris in the early aughts of the twentieth century, Orphism is perhaps the first modern art movement that begins with an abstract tabula rasa. Melding ideas of spiritualism, Hermeticism, and scientific discoveries, these artists explored the pure concepts of color, shape, line and form. For a brief moment, an international cadre of artists established an aesthetic that would become one of the most profound paradigm shifts of contemporary visual art. Artists included in the exhibition: Robert Delaunay, Sonia Delaunay, Marcel Duchamp, Mainie Jellett, František Kupka, Francis Picabia, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Marc Chagall, Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Morgan Russell. A musical introduction is provided by the West Fourth Trio. This program was recorded March 8, 2025. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk
