Eaves also named the class, which was later confirmed after being revealed on StarTrek.com. According to Eaves, the Shepard-class was named after American astronaut, Alan Shepard. (Star Trek: The Art of John Eaves, p. 196) The designs for the Kerala were said to have "continued to experiment with the streamlined hull and elongated nacelles." Eaves specifications for the design measured 1658'-7" in length, 203'-9" in height, and the diameter of the saucer was 737'-11". (Star Trek: The Art of John Eaves, p. 197) The USS Curie was a Shepard-class starship that was to have originally appeared in "Context Is for Kings" before being rewritten as the Crossfield-class USS Glenn. (Star Trek: The Art of John Eaves, p. 196) The USS Gagarin (NCC-1309) was a Federation Shepard-class starship operated by Starfleet during the mid-23rd century. In 2256, this ship was commanded by Captain T'Shen Kovil. During the Federation-Klingon War, this ship was in the same sector as the USS Hoover and the USS Muroc when they were simultaneously ambushed by Klingons. The Gagarin faced six warships. After losing warp drive, Kovil sent a distress call, to which the USS Discovery responded. The Discovery attempted to relieve the pressure on the Gagarin, but was unable to interdict a torpedo fired by a Bird-of-Prey that destroyed the Gagarin with all hands. The loss of the three Federation starships resulted in 462 Starfleet casualties.
