The Māori customary practice of creating adornments from whale bone and other whale material is being revived; however, the harvest of beached whales that have died is still heavily restricted, and those trying to travel with whalebone taonga are often blocked at the border. Māori creatives Muaupoko carver Sian Montgomery-Neutze, carvers Bernard Makoare, Rangi Kipa. and Taranaki artist Ngāhina Hohaia travelled to The Pacific Festival of Arts and Culture in Hawai’i, USA, in June this year to showcase their tohorā taonga, but permits were denied by U.S customs under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), because they were made from whale materials including whale tooth and baleen sinew. Department of Conservation (DOC) Deputy Director-General Ruth Isaac explains why they couldn’t assist the artists to travel with their taonga.
