Unit conversion is a multi-step process that involves multiplication or division by a numerical factor, selection of the correct number of significant digits, and rounding. Unit Conversion Process This process uses the fact that any number or expression can be multiplied by "one" without changing its value. This allows the conversion of units by multiplying the initial measurement by one (or more) forms of the number 1. While the multiplication by 1 does not change the value of the measurement, it does change the measurement units. It’s very easy to systematically apply unit conversion process to solve conversions within or between measurement systems. It may be necessary to multiply by more than one conversion ratio in more complex conversions. Use these steps to construct a unit conversion problem so one (or more) of the units cancel until only the desired unit remains: Step 1. Identify the unit you have. These are the Starting Units. Step 2. Identify the unit you want. These are the Desired Units. Step 3. Identify appropriate unit conversion factor(s). These are the Linking (or Ratio) Unit(s). Use EXACT conversion factors whenever available. Step 4. Cancel units and perform the math calculations (e.g., multiply, divide). Repeat the calculation (double check). Step 5. Evaluate the result. Does the answer make sense? The process of conversion depends on the specific situation and the intended purpose. This may be governed by regulation, contract, technical specifications or other published standards. Engineering judgment may include such factors as: The precision and accuracy of measurement and the associated uncertainty of measurement. The statistical confidence interval or tolerance interval of the initial measurement. The number of significant figures of the measurement. The intended use of the measurement including the engineering tolerances. Unit conversion is a multi-step process that involves multiplication or division by a numerical factor. There are different ways to measure weight, distance, and temperature. In several countries, distance is measured in kilometers, weight in kilograms, and temperature in celsius. Let's say you're on vacation in India, and you're told that the distance between the two cities is 100 kilometers. How much is that in miles? This is where unit conversion comes into the picture. What is Unit Conversion? Unit conversion is a process with multiple steps that involves multiplication or division by a numerical factor or, particularly a conversion factor. The process may also require selection of the correct number of significant digits, and rounding. Different units of conversion are used to measure different parameters. Measuring Length Measuring Weight Measuring Capacity Measuring Temperature In mathematics, we convert the units of measurement to understand better. For example, the length of a table is measured in inches whereas the length of a garden is measured in yards to make it simple to understand. We cannot measure the length of a finger in miles. To measure different quantities, units of measurements are required. Definition of Conversion of Units By definition conversion of units means the conversion between different units and measurements of the same quantity done by the process of multiplication or division. In maths, conversion is the process of changing the value of one form to another for example inches to millimeters, or liters to gallons. Units are used for measuring length, measuring weight, measuring capacity, measuring temperature, and measuring speed. Conversion of Units Measurements Different units are used to measure different quantities. Let us explore the units used to measure the following: Length Temperature Area Volume Weight Quantity Units Length inch (in), feet (ft), yards (yd), miles Temperature Kelvin (K), Fahrenheit (F), Celsius (C) Area Square Inch, Square Feet, Acre, Square Yard, Square Mile Volume (Capacity) Fluid Ounces (fl oz), pint (pt), quarts (qt), gallons (gal) Weight (Mass) Ounces, Pounds (lb), Tons Unit Conversion Charts Unit Conversion Charts provide us with conversion factors for conversions of different units of length, area, volume, temperature, etc, and serve as a reference for easy and quick calculations. The charts are also considered as the conversion of units formula where it helps in converting any quantity given in one unit to another.
