President Georgi Parvanov, who arrived on Thursday, was greeted by his Vietnamese counterpart, President Nguyen Minh Triet, on Saturday morning. The two President attended a red carpeted welcoming ceremony and inspected guards before the two had an hour long meeting behind closed doors in the Presidential Palace. The pair then witnessed a signing ceremony of two agreements on judicial cooperation and tourism. It is the first time President Georgi Parvanov has visited Vietnam as a state leader. Vietnam and Bulgaria established diplomatic relations in 1950. The Bulgarian constitution changed as the Soviet Union fell in 1990, halting relations between Bulgaria and Vietnam for a few years. But from 1993, their relationship gradually recovered. Trade turnover between the two countries reached 80 (m) million US dollars in 2008. Vietnam's exports to Bulgaria are mainly coal, coffee, rubber, seafood, textile and foot-wear.
