An original song about memories of Clifton, Bristol, England. If you would like to read the lyrics to this song, they are at my music website http://www.bobbikeith.com/   / bobbikeithmusic   In case anyone is wondering where Bristol is, it's at the top of the Bristol Channel, near the Severn Estuary, on the South-West coast of England. It used to be an important port, a gateway to the Atlantic, and its history is colored with good and bad aspects, like the discovery of North America (some say by John Cabot who sailed from Bristol and landed at Newfoundland, Canada) and the slave trade. Most of the houses in Clifton were built in the Georgian period in the 1700s, which was an amazing experience for me as a student, as I was fortunate enough to temporarily live in a few of these huge houses and walk through this architecture wondering if I'd bump into Jane Austen. Perhaps the most famous of Clifton's landmarks is the Suspension Bridge, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who also built England's first iron ship, The S.S. Great Britain. The bridge, which spans the Avon Gorge, is very pretty throughout the seasons, and they light it up a few times a year. Another landmark is Royal York Crescent, which is the longest and most symmetrical Georgian crescent in England, a sister to its "cousin", The Crescent in Bath (about 30 miles away). Other groupings or "terraces" of architectural interest are The Paragon, Sion Hill, Windsor Terrace and Cornwallis Crescent, which are all shown in my video. There is also a sunrise shot from one of the university's residence halls, Manor Hall, where I lived for one term. In the 1970s, Clifton was also home to The Troubadour folk-club, which attracted many well known artists. When it closed, another venue called The Stonehouse was formed near Bristol's city center. Some artists who appeared at these clubs have gone on to become nationally and internationally known, for example, Al Stewart, Stefan Grossman, Martin Carthy, Steve Tilston and Bristol's own, and much loved, Fred Wedlock. Clifton's houses were where I spent many hours practicing guitar and rehearsing with the band I joined after university, The Fred Bloggs Band. We would play in pubs and dance halls in Bristol, appeared on TV and toured U.S. military bases in Germany and Spain. http://www.angelfire.com/music2/alche... In 1978, I formed The Gladys Bloggs Band and we played at the Ashton Court Festival, which was held on a large estate on the other side of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. My video shows a few clips of the surrounding Leigh Woods, which was a favorite place to walk, relax and observe nature. The opening clip of the video was taken in the neighbouring countryside of Somerset, and the sequence in the middle with the labrador dog and tawny kitten was on a farm in the Cotswolds, north east on the River Avon. My song tries to describe how those images from my student days still linger, even though I'm now living 6000 miles away. I've also included some images of Los Angeles and Southern California, as a contrast. I hope you enjoy the tour.
