This classical honkyoku (Zen meditation music) for shakuhachi 尺八 is attributed to Ikkyu Zenji, a famous Buddhist priest from the 1400s. Murasakino is an old name for an area in Japan near Kyoto. so this is the version of Reibo (Yearning for the Bell) from that district. This does fit with what we know about Ikkyu, as he did live in that area. Also, Ikkyu did write poetry about the shakuhachi. But there is no proof that he did or didn't play this piece. Fortunately, this meditation piece is such beautiful music that it doesn't need a distinctive pedigree. I learned Murasakino Reibo from Chikuho Sakai II in 1972, in Hyogo Prefecture, not from from Osaka Japan. I recorded this video at home on 26 May 2020, at a time when so many of us are at home. It is my first attempt at recording an entire piece on video, and also my first try at using two cameras. I promise I'll do better next time. Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
