Background: The Deadly Treadlies Project was operated by ASYASS between 2003 and 2009. Deadly Treadlies achieved significant outcomes and operated programs at ASYASS and through outreach workshops delivered to Town Camps, remote communities, Schools and service providers. Programs were run in collaboration with Government/ NGO service providers, community centres, schools, family and police. The outreach program delivered to town camps and communities helped facilitate the referral of young people without support mechanisms to case management, education and support services. Early intervention programs like Deadly Treadlies build skills, self-esteem and resilience in young people. They contribute to the prevention of crime, a reduction in substance and inhalant misuse and promote healthy living. Run in conjunction with schools and youth services programs like Deadly Treadlies can improve education outcomes and increase participants access to important youth support services. All too often the tough-on-crime approach favours funding incarceration instead of prevention at a fraction of the cost to the tax payer. Official Recognition: Deadly Treadlies was widely acknowledged and received the following formal recognition for its work as an Early Intervention, Diversionary and Crime Prevention Project: Urban Crime Prevention and Youth At Risk - Compendium of Promising Strategies and from around the World, 11th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Bangkok, Thailand from 18-25th April 2005; Ministerial Community Safety Award (March 2005), NT Government; Certificate of Merit (2005), Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards; Special Achievement Award for a Cycling Organisation (2006), Australian Bicycling Achievement Awards; 2004 Givewell Best Charity Project, 4th Annual Ethical Investor Corporate Awards; Best Youth Project (2005), Territory Tidy Towns Deadly Treadlies Video: The Deadly Treadlies video was made by Suzy Bates in workshops with young people from Santa Teresa, Titjikala and Papunya communities in Central Australia in 2004.
