I still maintain that Momma have a most unfortunate name. Makes me think of that Honey Boo Boo show, know what I'm sayin? In any case, implicit bias might have kept me from paying attention to the band and it would not be until a truly magical weekend in October of 2024 when Momma managed to upstage a host of bands that are integral to my musical journey with a punchy and energetic set at the Best Friends Forever festival in Las Vegas NV that I belatedly got a taste of the band. Yes, you can see that set here: • Momma live @ Best Friends Forever, Las Veg... Formed in 2015 by high school friends Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten in Calabasas, California, the dynamic duo bonded over a shared love for grunge, indie and alt-rock legends like Nirvana, The Breeders, Pavement, and Liz Phair before setting off on their own musical odyssey. Momma's sound is a blend of earworm melodies, crunchy guitar riffs and moody vocals that channels the sounds of your favorite 90's indie mixtape without sounding derivative. So after thoroughly kicking my ass at BFF2024, I resolved to keep my ear to the ground while waiting for Momma's next move. And it's been quite the trifecta. First came the release of their new album 'Welcome to My Blue Sky' out on Polyvinyl on April 4, 2025; check. Next came a slot playing on Jimmy Kimmel ( • Momma – I Want You (Fever) ) ; check. Then on May 19th, their spring tour of 2025 finally brought them to within the gravitational field that comprises my road tripping sphere of travel courtesy of a show at the Fine Line in Minneapolis; check and mate. Momma's albums are terrific, they just don't write ANY duds. But whereas on record many of their songs have a dreamy quality courtesy of fuzzy guitars and lovely vocal harmonies, in a live setting the songs take on a more muscular sound through grungier guitars and a spectacular rhythm section while still retaining the angelic quality of those vocals. On this night in Minneapolis the band was in fine form, the crowd lively. Was I a little sad that they did not play 'Biohazard'? just a teensy bit. But they more than made up with a power-packed mix of bangers and the more introspective material. For me, the highlight of the night was 'Bottle Blonde'. Although on record the bubbly instrumentation betrays the song's lyrical content and emotional center, the live arrangement took on a world-weary quality that was just devastatingly good. The resolve of a band that's been through some shit and managed to come out on the other side. Those 'aha' moments are one of the reasons I started recording these shows. Speaking of which, I didn't have the best vantage point to record from, having arrived late to the venue on account of a misreading of the time that doors would be opening and the biblical downpour walloping Mpls on the night of the show. But the sound is great and did my best in terms of the camera work; I'm pretty happy with the results. Hope you enjoy! ps. get out there and see Momma if you get the chance, what a terrific young band... #livemusic #mommaband #2025 https://www.mommaband.com/ / momma.band / mommaband https://x.com/momma_band / @mommaband https://linktr.ee/mommaband The Setlist 00:00:00 (an introduction) 00:00:29 (the band takes the stage) 00:00:59 Sincerely 00:03:09 I Want You (Fever) 00:07:45 Medicine 00:07:11 (the scream) 00:12:34 Ohio All The Time 00:16:19 Stay All Summer 00:20:33 New Friend 00:25:21 Bottle Blonde 00:29:06 No Stage 00:34:18 Lucky 00:39:13 Tall Home 00:42:50 How to Breathe 00:46:24 Last Kiss 00:50:16 Motorbike 00:54:36 Welcome to My Blue Sky 00:58:31 Rodeo 01:03:34 My Old Street 01:09:47 (the band comes back for an encore) 01:11:19 (audience participation) 01:13:32 Christian Brothers (Elliott Smith cover) 01:20:12 Sunday (Narrow Head cover) 01:13:32 (happy bday Aron & Kevin!) 01:25:28 Speeding 72 01:30:05 (end credits)
