Dos Rios Rocks – A Rockhound Expedition

Long ago, perhaps 50 million years or so, a slab of the earths curst was subducted to around 10 miles below the surface so quickly that the material remained relatively cool resulting in some unusual mineral assemblages. This material was accreted to form part of the California coast ranges, raised to near the surface and eroded by the eel river to finally rest in the riverbed as cobbles and boulders. A particularly nice exposure can be seen a little down the Eel River from Dos Rios and this video chronicles an expedition to that area.
