'Protesters CLASH with Riot Police in Athens After Train Crash' Days of protests have taken place after the deadliest rail disaster in Greece's history, which left 57 people dead, and dozens more injured. Clashes between protesters and police were reported on Sunday, as an estimated 12,000 people joined a demonstration in the capital Athens. Some protestors set fire to rubbish bins and threw petrol bombs at riot police, but most demonstrated peacefully. Police responded with tear gas and stun grenades. The crash occurred near the city of Larissa, on 28 February, when a passenger and freight train were traveling toward one another, on the same track. The first four carriages of the passenger train were derailed, and the first two caught fire and were almost completely destroyed. The train crash has been widely attributed to human error and a lack of safety measures in the transport network. A station master in Larissa has been charged with manslaughter by negligence and is due to appear in court. But the railway workers' union blamed successive governments' "disrespect" towards Greek railways for leading to this "tragic result". Train drivers in Greece have said there have been long-running problems with the electronic systems that are supposed to warn them of danger ahead. The demonstrators gathering over several days are demanding better safety standards and express sympathy for the lives lost in the accident. Vangelis Vassiliou, protester: “This crime will not be forgotten. Our dead fellow classmates will not be forgotten, or any of those who died in this accident. And we will continue so that nothing is covered up and those responsible are held accountable.” The Greek Prime Minister has asked for forgiveness from the victims’ families. In a Facebook message, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that "in the Greece of 2023... two trains heading in different directions cannot run on the same line and no one notice".
