Keynote Speaker, Martin Wolfe, speaks on 'We Need to Talk about Landraces...' during the second session of the 1st International Conference of Wheat Landraces for Healthy Food Systems in Bologna, Italy (13-15 June 2018). This event was co-organised by IFOAM - Organic International, Kamut and the Alma Mater Studiorum of the University of Bologna, Italy. 🔎 FIND OUT MORE about Wheat Landrace: The 1st International Conference of Wheat Landraces for Healthy Food Systems, taking place from 13 - 15 June 2018 in Bologna, Italy, will bring together like-minded scientists to discuss the topics of landraces, including ancient and heritage wheat with a focus on health and nutrition as well as natural flavors and aromas. We invite all wheat landrace researchers, growers, processors, nutrition specialists, and those who are interested in discussing the link between the use of wheat landraces, including ancient and heritage wheat, for food and positive effects on health to participate. https://wheat-landraces.ifoam.bio As part of the 1st International Conference of Wheat Landraces for Healthy Food Systems, the local host is planning a field day that would showcase a variety of wheat landraces, including those sent in by conference participants. The research group of Prof. Dinelli (Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences) has a wheat landraces collection of about 170 accessions coming from different parts of the world and which are cultivated at Podere Santa Croce: • 44 accessions of ancient durum wheat (T. turgidum spp. durum); • 13 accessions of modern durum wheat (T. turgidum spp. durum); • 44 accessions of ancient soft wheat (T. aestivum ssp. aestivum); • 10 accessions of modern soft wheat (T. aestivum ssp. aestivum); • 5 accessions of einkorn (T. monococcum spp. monococcum) • 19 accessions of tetraploid wheat (6 accessions of T. turgidum spp. turanicum; 4 accessions of T. turgidum spp. paleocolchicum; 1 accession of T. timopheevii spp. timopheevii; 5 accessions of T. turgidum spp. dicoccum; 1 accession of T. turgidum spp. carthlicum; 2 accessions of T. turgidum spp. polonicum; 2 accessions of T. turgidum spp. turgidum) • 8 evolutionary populations; • 11 accessions of hexaploid wheat (1 accession of T. aestivum ssp. macha; 3 accessions of T. aestivum ssp. spelta; 1 accession of T. vavilovi; 7 accessions of T. zhukovskyi) • 7 accessions of wheat from Japan; • 8 accessions of different origins. A growing amount of research is now being conducted on landraces including ancient and heritage wheat with a focus on health and nutrition as well as natural flavors and aromas. Much progress has been made in understanding the sensitivity problems that so many people are experiencing from modern wheat. At the same time, the anti-inflammatory nature of ancient wheat and the important effect that it potentially has to help reduce or prevent chronic disease is beginning to be realized. Still, others are attempting to find wheat which is better adapted for organic systems as opposed to expensive high-input chemical-dependent systems. There are also some who are studying the nutritional comparison of food processed by different methods. Many of these scientists work independently of one another and often face ridicule and lack of support by their institution and peers.
