As funders concerned with equity and justice, we know that many of the barriers to well-being in the communities we care about stem from an imbalance of power. But what is power, really? How does it work? What are the mechanics of building power, and wielding it once it is won? In this plenary, experts will offer insights on the complexities of three different types of power: political power, economic power, and cultural power. Speaker: Maya Wiley, Counsel to the Mayor of New York Watch other speakers from this panel on NFG's YouTube channel: Jeff Chang, author of Who We Be and Can't Stop Won't Stop Cindy Chavez, Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors Donald Cohen, In The Public Interest --- This plenary was part of the Neighborhood Funders Group's National Convening that took place in June 2016 in Oakland, CA. NFG once again gathered national and place-based funders from around the country for its biennial convening. The theme for this year's conference, Philanthropic Strategies for People, Place and Power, explored best practices for cultivating social, racial and economic justice and community well-being. NFG provides a space for funders to grapple together with the big, complex issues of our contemporary moment. http://www.nfg.org/nfg_conference_2016
