A playthrough of the sub-boss Noob-Smoke in the PS2 version of Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Deception. Around the time this game came out, the internet definition of “noob” was starting to gain real traction, and I had trouble taking Noob Saibot seriously as a character for a while after that. It’s funny the things you remember when you look at something from your childhood after a long while. As I said in the previous video however, Noob-Smoke is one of the most badass boss combos in existence. Two previous bosses from MKII (who I both did videos on), united together as a unique tag-team boss battle. It’s incredibly bad-ass, and certainly makes for a more interesting and unique sub-boss battle than most previous titles. So, Noob and Smoke are part of one character. Well, here anyway. I’ll get more into that in the later videos. Here however they are a tag-team, tagging out when the player switches fighting styles. They also both have their own unique special moves however (and fatalities, if memory serves), meaning that you’re basically getting two characters for the price of one. Even better is how their inter-linked style combos work. When you change from one style into the next during a combo, Noob tags out for Smoke to continue the combo, who then tags Noob back in to continue it as well. It looks absolutely bad-ass, if technically a bit cheap universe-wise, and really helps to define them as a unique and powerful sub-boss team. Noob and Smoke also have easiest the best hidden costumes of the game. Hell, they’re so good that they became the default costumes for them in Mortal Kombat Armageddon. As for playing as Noob and Smoke…well, I often say that the MK Bosses are more entertaining to fight than to play as, and that’s yet another example of this. Noob-Smoke is all about being light on your feet, switching between the two characters often and using the terrain and environment to your advantage. A good example of this is how Noob and Smoke have a special move where they can swap out into the other character, strike the opponent from the opposite side as a result. If the opponent is near the edge of an arena it will even knock them off it, making for a hilarious cheap before. Another cheap move is where Noob summons Smoke for a striking punch at the same time. This move in particular has a hell of a knockback effect, and comes out so quickly that it makes for a great way to knock the opponent into a death-trap, as you see in the Noob-Smoke mirror match in this video, and especially when paired with that switching special move. Also, notice I said Noob could use that move. Noob and Smoke share a couple of special moves, both also have their own. This can honestly lead to some rather confusing gameplay, especially when you also utilise combos that cause the current character to switch out at the end of it. I personally found it quite disorientating, especially considering the duo’s shared specials both switch them out. Noob also has the ability to turn invisible, and Smoke can a cloud attack (which I never really found a use for), a move where he ducks and Noob throws shurikens over him, and also his trademark teleporting uppercut from MK3, just for that extra bit of fan-service. On the whole, Noob-Smoke makes an incredibly bad-ass tag team, and a really great idea in general. I did find them difficult to get used, I must admit, especially with the heavy-reliance on special button combos Deception has, but on the whole, I still appreciate the time and effort that went into making them. It’s especially nice to have a more expert character such as this, given that so many characters in Deception have the problem of feeling kind of samey. A unique, cross-up style in an otherwise quite standard 3D fighter certainly makes for something quite unique, especially as a boss fight. We’ll be seeing the turn of another hidden MKII boss soon, and then the return of an MKII boss in the near future. We’ll also be seeing both Noob and Smoke a couple of times again. MK does give me a ton of continuity to enjoy, I must admit, both from a series perspective and a coverage perspective. Up next, it’s onto the extensive number of hidden characters in this game.
