How Catholic sacred art and beauty can help renew our culture and our parishes. Deacon Mike and artist Robert Puschautz explore prayer, patronage, and forming a new generation of Catholic artists. Deacon Mike Beauvais sits down with Catholic artist Robert Puschautz, executive director of the Stabat Mater Foundation, to explore how beauty and sacred art can draw hearts back to God. Robert shares how the murals, stained glass, and Stations of the Cross in his Chicago parishes first awakened deep questions about God, suffering, and the covenants long before he had the words for them, and how friendship and Pope Benedict’s writings later led him back to the Church. He explains representational painting, his journey from landscapes to commissioned church work, and why nearly all great art in history springs from faith. Robert also describes the mission of Stabat Mater: praying for artists in a difficult cultural climate, forming them in a classical Catholic studio, and helping parishes renew their churches with truly beautiful sacred art. Along the way, he reflects on parents discerning art school for their children, the need for patrons, and his beloved “Madonna of the Roses,” a Marian image rich in biblical symbolism.
