David Baskin, MD, FAANS, FACS, director of the Kenneth R. Peak Brain & Pituitary Treatment Center at Houston Methodist, explains how his team is working to develop a promising new, non-invasive treatment in the fight against glioblastoma (GBM) and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) brain cancers: oncomagnetic therapy. What started in a petri dish with cell cultures, this technology utilizes spinning magnets to create an oscillating magnetic field (sOMF) that disrupts the electron transport in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, leading to a marked increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and consequent cancer cell death while sparing normal healthy cells. Further, sOMF treatment induces the body’s anti-tumor immune response, activating T-helper cells, natural killer cells, cytotoxic T cells (CTLs) and anti-tumor M1 macrophages to help kill off additional cancer cells that the magnet did not.
