They are believed to have been linked to an earlier gang from Constanta, led by crimelord Catalin Zahari and his wife Florina Spiru - who was once pictured lying on a bed of banknotes. The gangs took advantage of dark winter nights, breaking into properties using ladders to reach un-alarmed second floors. The gangs also targeted homes in search of so-called Asian gold and jewellery, identifying properties where the owner was absent.
