The threat of small, inexpensive UAS’s (Unmanned Aerial Systems) to modern forces is increasing at an astounding pace. Whether for reconnaissance or direct action, their usage, be it by traditional forces or non-state adversaries cannot be ignored. The Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems-Radio Frequency (CUAS-RF) counter UAS system as developed by IEC Infrared Systems addresses this threat using a series of proven subsystems, brought together to form a complete solution. Detection of aerial targets is accomplished by use of a flat-panel (ESA) radar, capable of detection of small targets beyond 500 meters. Target detection information will automatically cue a co-located positioner which aims a thermal and visual imaging system at the target, providing confirmation of the target, as well as enabling video tracking for fine positioning. Upon visual confirmation that the target is, in fact, a hostile/unwanted UAV, a radio-frequency disruption system (bore-sighted with the imagers) can be used to disrupt both the communications link and GPS guidance of the UAV, causing it to automatically descend to ground level, and facilitating its capture.
