Russia's Kh-101 cruise missile: What is it and can it be stopped?

A Russian Kh-101 cruise missile hit a Kyiv’s children’s hospital this week. What are these weapons, and can Ukraine stop them striking again? The Kh-101 is an upgraded, stealthier version of the older Kh-55. It travels low to the ground to avoid radar, and flies like an aircraft - it even has wings on the top and an engine at the back. This means it can manoeuvre in flight, aided by TV cameras in the nose and GLONASS - the Russian equivalent of GPS. The Kh-101 can therefore change targets mid-flight and can strike targets with a high degree of accuracy. The missiles are air-launched, meaning they are dropped from aircraft - typically Tu-160 or Tu-95 strategic bombers. Kh-101 is typically equipped with a high-explosive warhead weighing 450kg, but variants can carry penetrating or cluster bomb warheads instead. The Kh-102 is a variant equipped with a nuclear warhead of 450 kilotons, or 30 times the power of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Despite the missiles’s stealth features, Ukraine has had some success in shooting them down. Old Soviet S-300 systems are known to have successfully hit Kh-101s in the air, and US-supplied Patriot systems have also proved very effective.
