Sensory and emotional overload are some of the most common — and least recognized — causes of lost productivity and burnout at work. In this Learn module, we explore how auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory, and emotional overload impact cognitive performance. For neurodivergent employees especially, poorly designed environments can quickly drain energy, reduce focus, and lead to disengagement or burnout. We also discuss self-regulating behaviors such as seeking quiet spaces, movement, decompression time, or sensory adjustments — and why these behaviors should never be suppressed. When managers respond with flexibility, empathy, and psychological safety, employees become more engaged, resilient, and aligned with team goals. Neuro inclusion isn’t about lowering expectations. It’s about reducing unnecessary friction so people can do their best work. This module outlines practical ways leaders can design environments that support focus, clarity, and sustained performance.
