Cabin fever is an idiomatic term we use for claustrophobic conditions one can find oneself in. Either it can be because of extreme climatic conditions like either summer or inhibiting winter which make you dread going outdoors and you end up most of the time at home. The person can develop a sense of fatigue, depression, anxiety etc. Sometimes it is also called as seasonal affective disorder or SAD. Prolonged stay within the four walls can lead to depression. We see this condition when there are extreme threats or conditions such as havocs that have been rocked on us by extreme climatic conditions as well as manmade in which people are afraid to go out and may remain indoors. This causes isolation, social withdrawal, feelings of anxiety and helplessness. Remember that this can be something that can be overcome if we take the right steps. Try to socially connect. It may not be possible to leave the home or office for extended times but you can make a point to remain connected with people. Have purpose in your life, stay active, do meaningful activities and you find that many of these symptoms can be overcome. The other solution for cabinet fever can be thought to be exercise and diet. When you exercise what happens is that your body becomes active and agile and some of these depressive thoughts can be uplifted. Sunlight has been found to be a great mood booster. So if you can exercise there is nothing like that. Certain foods can uplift your mood and are called “good mood foods”. Certain vegetables like beans, spinach, and fruits like mango banana etc whatever you enjoy please go ahead and have your filler fit. Avoid spicy, oily or junk foods because this can not only add to your calories but also lead to more depression which is not really recommended. If you are forced to be indoors make sure that your indoor is cheerful, grow plants because plants have been found to elevate mood and in spite of all this in case your mood doesn’t uplift please do seek medical attention because there are treatments like psychotherapy for cabin disorders.
