On an individual level, people with darker skin tone are often told that they are 'too dark', in other words they are not beautiful. This form of interracial discrimination is called colorism. In the documentary Shades, Indian actress/director Nandita Das talks about the impact of Bollywood films on the stereotyping of the female ideal of beauty.
