Ukraine introduces Bohdana- first NATO-standard howitzer

In a forest near Donetsk frontline Ukrainian forces prepare to unleash one of Ukraine’s latest weapons, the first Ukrainian-made artillery piece to be manufactured in the 155mm NATO-standard caliber. As “battle stations” command echoes through the woods the 2S22 Bohdana, a state-of-the-art self-propelled howitzer, rumbles into action. Developed and manufactured in Ukraine, the Bohdana is capable of striking targets up to 42 kilometers away. Its design allows for rapid deployment and swift withdrawal, essential for modern "shoot and scoot" tactics. The Bohdana was first deployed in combat during the summer of 2022, targeting Russian positions on Snake Island in the Black Sea. Some twenty pieces per month have been manufactured since then. “It is very effective, I really like the way it works. Different shells suit different tasks, and it can target a big range of targets, be it infantry, hideouts, or military vehicles," said a 20-year-old member of Bohdana crew who introduced himself with call sign Stager. “Once we take aim, the target is often hit straight away ... We can pack and go, camouflaging the howitzer swiftly," the unit's gunner callsign Vogak said. More than just a weapon, the Bohdana represents a significant achievement in Ukraine’s ability to develop domestic weapon production amid uncertainty about foreign deliveries. According to sources, U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to briefly pause military aid to Ukraine last month forced Europe to think of ways of stepping in to plug the gap.
