Dr. Kerry Assil: We utilize Phakic Intraocular Lenses to help people who can no longer, or no longer wish to, or can't wear their glasses or contact lenses. And for people, specifically, whose glasses are Cocobolo glasses or they're really high powered and high prescription contact lenses that are bothersome to the eye sometimes. In these procedures, we take advantage that the two lenses of the eye have an empty space between them and we will place a lens in that empty space, between the two. That lens is quite small. It's about 1/4 the size of a contact lens and it fits in there very nicely. The lens that I like the most is referred to as the Verisyse Lens because it can sit safely inside the eye for many, many, many years and never cause a cataract. What we do is we create a little, tiny opening where the cornea meets the white of the eye. We slip that lens in and fasten it into position in front of the colored part of the eye, called the iris. The patient sits up and they're able to see.
