In this lecture, Dr. Ewan Coopey (Macquarie University) uses Roman coinage containing images of emperors and military standards to explore the meanings this imagery held across the Roman world. Drawing on the concept of the ‘regime of signs’ developed by Deleuze and Guattari, Dr. Coopey explores the ways in which coinage formed part of wider material systems, such as public monuments and military awards. Focusing on recently published coin assemblages from Dura Europos and Pojejena, this lecture argues that coins did more than convey official messages: they were active participants in broader networks of people, objects and ideas. This presentation is a recording of NUMISMA's March lecture, held on March 04 2026. NUMISMA is the seminar series of the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies. Researchers, students, curators and collectors interested in the study of ancient coins are welcome and encouraged to join our monthly seminars.
