“What Matters to Me and Why” represents a creative solution to an important and often unrecognized problem in the university setting: the separation of intellectual life from personal and spiritual issue. The people who shape USC, who teach students the ways of their particular disciplines, and who help them develop marketable skills also have a great deal to pass on in terms of worldly wisdom, moral guidance, and sources of spiritual strength. Jaime Velasco is a Maintenance Technician for USC’s Facilities Management Services Department. His current primary focus entails facilities operations for the President’s Office and Administration. In his 18 years with the university, Jaime has been regarded as an exceptional member of the Trojan family and recipient of the 2011 Sam Lee Award for outstanding service. He has been a participant serving on a four-person team for the annual “Line of March” that is key in directing students to their line up positions during the main USC Graduation Ceremony. From 2000-2004, while serving as a Groundskeeper, he created and facilitated the innovative “Pay for Skills” training program for all grounds maintenance personnel. Prior to his tenure at USC, Jaime worked as a Quality Control Supervisor for Dubs, Inc. where he was awarded the 1995 Dub Vince Lyons Customer Service Award.
