Today I made several hive splits off my winterized honeybee colonies as the starts for my new second Apiary location! This is the first time I've made so many splits at one time.The idea is to create small hives that have 1-2 frames of resources, such as honey, nectar and bee bread(pollen). Then add 2-3 frames of brood that can be hatching brood, capped brood, larvae and eggs. This will entice the bees you add to stay with these frames as they want to care for this brood. Finally, you will add a queen, whether thats the original queen (walk-away split) or a new queen or queen cell. I wait at least an hour after making a split to add the queen as the pheromones from the original queen will begin to diminish and the bees will be more be more accepting of a new(caged) queen.
