When 37 B.C. MLAs voted yes on first reading of Independent MLA Tara Armstrong's bill to repeal the province's human rights code, social media erupted with outrage. But the vote didn't actually mean those MLAs support the bill. It's traditionally common practice in the B.C. legislature for all MLAs to support first reading so bills can be read and debated, rather than killed immediately. That changed after Armstrong and MLA Dallas Brodie left the Conservative Party last year and introduced controversial legislation attacking reconciliation and trans rights. The NDP began calling votes on first readings, and Conservatives voted against them to avoid appearing to support extreme positions. New interim Conservative Leader Trevor Halford says he's returning to the traditional approach of allowing all bills through first reading.
