Chris, who sometimes goes by the artist name Redcar and is the heartbeat of Christine and the Queens, is a memorable character. A Frenchman who hit London’s drag scene after a college break-up, he was inspired by the community’s deep bond. When it came time to start taking music-making seriously, he celebrated those queens by citing them in his “band” name. Last year, the singer’s gender fludity landed on the he/him side of the equation. The audience loyalty he’s built with 2018’s ‘Chris’ and 2020’s ‘La vita nuova’ is considerable.
