Long story short: in the past few weeks, I've been feeling a disturbance in my zen. Everything was going pretty ok in my world, but I could not find that spark of extra happiness and enthusiasm that usually burns in me. It was time to learn and do something new that would keep me excited and engaged again. Then, one Saturday morning, the solution came to my silly head while looking at the old longboard and skateboards in my garage. After years of riding my electric Onewheels, I needed to go back to the roots of all boards, to the most pure, relaxing and classic vibe. Mostly, I was in need of a different kind of experience that would make me start from scratch. After an extensive research, I was eventually quite convinced that I needed to add surfskating to my human experience or -at least-to give it a try. Minutes later, I had already found the perfect board to begin my adventure: very large, completely flat with no visible grip-tape, sporting huge wheels and specialized trucks. Basically, a surfboard for the road. I have to admit, while (impatiently) waiting for such precious cargo to be delivered from sunny California to Virginia, I massively bombarded my brain and soul with instrumental surf music, read my classic Silver Surfer comics, watched “The Big Wednesday” for the millionth time, not to mention most of the available videos on Youtube about this discipline. Heck...I even re-designed one of my home's bathrooms with surfing/ocean decor lol Fast forward to this afternoon: I finally received the (giant) package with the mighty board, already assembled and ready to surf the neighborhood. It is a breathtaking 67" Pinger by Hamboards, carved out of natural bamboo, painted in North Shore Blue color and featuring patented HST Trucks with built-in springs, not to mention the ultra-fast bearings and some buttery smooth 90mm wheels. My new, very high-quality Pinger truly looks and feels like an early-days surfboard, which is exactly what I was trying to achieve. It is inevitable: I'm gonna become the Kelly Slater of my neighborhood lol ! Now that I'm at it, goofily trying to master a brand new art, figuring out the board's potential and ways to move, I realize that the coolest and most unique thing about surfskating is that you are not supposed to push the board that much, but pump it to generate speed while carving. It’s basically what you would do when riding a wave! And instead on focusing on ollies, flips and grinds, I'll be capturing zen vibes by cross-stepping and nose-riding . To conclude my delirium, In case you are wondering what this fool is trying to feel and accomplish on his new adventure, let me tell you a little more about this whole thing. Surfskating is a form of skateboarding that replicates the experience of surfing on dry land. It is different than either longboarding or skateboarding, believe it or not. In fact, a surfskate system is distinguished from a traditional skateboard system by the utilization of two different trucks, front and back, with specific functions and geometries that, together, yield thrust, just like a surfboard. Surfskates, or surf skateboards, were invented by surfers who wanted a way to surf on days with no waves. These early skateboarders were called "asphalt surfers." Among all the other random things, I guess I am officially one of them now 😝 And now, let’s see where the next wave brings this old man…
