I think personally his character is very complex. He's being mistreated in Hogwarts and then he chooses a certain path that well...looks bad. I certainly see and understand his sacrifice with being a double agent and doing everything for the greater good. And everything would have worked out the way it did if he hadn't kept things under wraps. Still, it is saddening to know that his generation didn't know his contribution.
