Famed for her stratospheric high notes and engaging stage presence as Heart's lead singer (and songwriter), Ann (and her sister Nancy) first gained fame after the release of '76's Dreamboat Annie, with her crazy high notes on the group's signature tune "Crazy on You" earning her both chart success and critical in equal measures. Though time pressed on and Heart's style changed, Ann and Nancy remained the driving force behind the group's success, with Ann's voice never losing its touch even in the 2010s Ann started off as a slightly heavier soprano, with effortless higher notes and slightly darker (but still strong) lower ones. While Ann is very consistent vocally over her career, her voice did deepen over time - though still able to belt in the mid-fifth octave, her timbre in the '90s was much darker than it was in the '70s, to the point where she would likely qualify (late career) as a mezzo-soprano. Though famed for her soaring high notes, Ann has displayed a surprising amount of strength in her lower register, dipping down frequently to the mid-third octave (while making it sound rather easy, might I add). In her late career especially her low notes had a notable weight behind them, evidenced in particular by her very strong D3 on "Goodbye Blue Sky". With that said, Ann's obvious strengths are in her upper register. Her belting ranges from clean, siren-esque to heavy-sounding howls (the D5 at the end of "Soul of the Sea" is earth-shattering!), while her highest belted note - an A5 - still sounds extremely impressive. Her head voice, while not utilised quite as much, was still incredibly good, with Ann occasionally adding impromptu vocal runs and slides into the sixth octave at the end of some of her live performances. I can find very little to criticise about Ann's singing, and even today, she still performs at a level that would make today's singers in their prime sound like complete amateurs. Personally, I think calling call Ann Wilson the "greatest female rock singer of all time" is almost an insult, as her talent defies both gender and genre. I highly doubt there is another singer with the level of versatility, consistency and sheer power that Ann has - truly one of a kind. Thanks for watching this video, hope you enjoy! :)
