"I won't be vacant anymore, I won't be waiting anymore" |subtitles are available| song by the national a somewhat depressing view on meredith & derek in season 3 (with some s2 when needed but it's definitely all centred on s3) #greysanatomy #meredithgrey #derekshepherd • while i think s2 has their most iconic scenes, i like how s3 just doesn't settle on 'happy mode' once they get together. it's kind of an emotional rollercoaster start to finish with some extremely happy moments and extremely miserable ones, and tbh i could've chosen to portray the better side of them and just leave it at that & it probably would've worked anyway, but i also believe it's more complex and meaningful than that so here we are • i picked this song (i know it's about addiction but it all fits anyway) specifically to highlight derek's point of view in relation to meredith's issues/fears, and her poor coping mechanisms, and how he's forced to pull away from her because of that. what i really wanted to get at, tho, is how derek's own unrealistic expectations played a part too, how his optimism was very much a double-edged sword the whole time. the dynamic of idealization/disillusionment is a constant in their relationship throughout s1-4, of course, but in s3 is particularly strong and it concerns derek specifically. as much as he envisioned himself as meredith's knight in shining armour, as a matter of fact he was miles away from fitting in that role - not only because meredith wouldn't let him - but also because he found out he really wasn't that person. not as steady and unfaltering as he imagined himself to be, after all. and i think that's the most compelling part • ok i'll stop now. i know this doesn't really /matter/ seen how s3 aired ten years ago, and they got past that point married had kids ect. (ect...... lol) i just wanted to explain a little my thought process. also! this is the second time i vid merder with a song by the national mmmh so there's something there. i hope i did it justice. every song by them is so vivid and specific in terms of imagery and feelings, and i always feel a little uncertain transposing all that to make it fit something else. idk i tried using as few voiceovers as i could, since the lyrics really speak for themselves, and exactly zero fxs.
