Hours before high-stakes talks on Greenland’s future, Donald Trump has said it would be “unacceptable” for the Arctic Island to be anything less than “in the hands” of the US. Subscribe ► https://www.youtube.com/user/theguard... Trump’s remarks came as the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers prepared to meet the US vice-president, JD Vance, and the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, in Washington to discuss the territory amid rising tensions after weeks of US pressure. Earlier this week, Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, told a joint press conference with his Danish counterpart, Mette Frederiksen, that the island would not be owned or governed by Washington, saying “we choose Denmark.” Denmark used to run Greenland as a colony and continues to control its foreign and security policy. The US president first raised the idea of a US takeover of Greenland in 2019, during his first term, but has ramped up his rhetoric significantly since returning to the White House last year, saying the US would take it “one way or the other”. But what do people in Greenland think of Trump’s threats? The Guardian’s Nordic correspondent, Miranda Bryant, reports from Greenland’s snow-covered capital, Nuuk, where the fear is palpable among residents who are faced with having to get on with their day-to-day lives, to find out more. #greenland #denmark #usa #trump #trumpgreenland #nuuk #nato #politics #greenlandtalks #donaldtrump #shorts
