Rachmaninoff was 19 years old and freshly graduated from the Moscow Conservatory when he composed this prelude in the summer of 1892. He was paid 40 rubles for it, roughly two months' wages for a factory worker at the time. It became the most recognized piano piece of its era. Audiences would shout "C-sharp!" at his concerts, demanding it as an encore no matter what else he played. He later called the piece his "Frankenstein" and once said, "Many, many times I wish I had never written it." Over 130 years later, pianists are still drawn to it. I'm no exception!
