Most people are familiar with an external form of urgency where you have external pressures and these external forms of urgency guiding your behavior. Is that important? Yes. But if you look at Outperformers and how they're able to be successful and achieve a lot day in and day out is they found a way to create an internal form of urgency that's irrelevant to all these external pressures and deadlines and demands. There are three ways that they do this: 1. Clarify the Consequences of Inaction This preys on a powerful psychological principal where a fear of loss is always going to be greater than the strength of gain. In other words, you're not necessarily thinking about what you'll gain by achieving something, but you thinking about what you'll lose if you don't achieve it. It's looking at it and saying, if I don't work hard early what is that going to cost me, or what are the consequences of that in action? I'm going to have to work so much harder towards the end? I'm going to have to see my family less? I might not hit my quota? I might not get my bonus? There are always consequences to inaction. If you can have that in the forefront of your psychology, it's going to be a very powerful thing to get you motivated and to help you create urgency towards whatever you're looking to achieve or accomplish. 2. Select the Causes of Complacency Usually, this is the people you surround yourself with. Maybe you heard me talk in another video about the “Big 5” where typically the average of the five people we are closest to. It's very seldom that you're going to find that you probably don't have a to of urgency in your life, but all of the people you're surrounding yourself with have a high amount of urgency in theirs. If I'm a little bit complacent, the people around me are probably complacent as well. It's actually taking a step back and saying, “who am I surrounding myself with and are they pulling me up or are they kind of keeping me right where I am?” 3 - Celebrate Your Small Wins It's very difficult to create urgency towards something that seems very far away. What Outperformers are phenomenal at is they're able to take their long-term goals and backtrack them and say, “I need to lay one brick at a time, and I'm going to celebrate each of those bricks every time that I do it.” Remember, clarify the consequences of inaction and look at the fear of loss being greater than the strength of gain. What will it really cost you if you don't have an internal form of urgency right now driving you? That's how you get that “leverage,” as Tony Robbins would say. Also, what is that going to cost you in the long run if you DON’T do something? Second, select the causes of complacency and look at the people you're surrounding yourself with. Then, also celebrate those small wins and what you're doing along the way. If you do these three things I guarantee you're going to be successful and Outperform The Norm. ------ ABOUT SCOTT ------ Scott Welle is a #1 international best selling author, speaker and founder of Outperform The Norm, a leading movement for business leaders and athletes looking raise their game and perform at the highest level.
